Started playing clarinet in 4th grade after a few months learning song flute. Played clarinet and bass clarinet through junior high, high school, and college. Taught myself to play saxophone while at college. Spent about 13 years as a police officer and detective, mostly at Santa Maria PD, and played in a PD country and western band. I put the instruments away for about 10 years while starting and operating a business. My son, then in high school but now a music teacher, attended a community band rehearsal in Atascadero and told me they needed players. I went to the rehearsal the next week and played with them for about ten years, becoming co-conductor the last three years. I served as musical director of many community theatre productions on the Central Coast and as artistic director for the Pacific Light Opera Theatre. In 2000 we moved to Amador County and found there was no community band. I was involved in starting the Amador County Community Band in 2001, a group of between 30 and 40 very talented players, and am serving as its conductor. For other hobbies , I am a jazz record collector, an amateur genealogist and a very active ham radio operator. For a day job, I operate www.bookcollector.net , an online used bookstore.
